You and Adelaide both had been rooted to the ground, watching in mute horror. Even as the servants smuggling you out begged you to move, neither of you could look away. Part of it was horror, yes, but the other part was duty. If you two did not bear witness to this awful scene, then no one who loved them would have.
You were unable to bury them, after all. The least you could do for the ones who gave you life was witness the last moments of theirs.
The King and Queen of Navra, restrained and thrown carelessly to the ground. Your brother was already dead by then; his face caved in, a mess of blood staining damn near every inch of his mangled body.
He had only been sixteen. He played with the newly hatched pigeons in the dovecote, and he loved to read. He spent most of his days nestled away in the library, his head stuck in a book and his mind drifting off in fantasy. Your brother, //Lukas//.
Your father had been taken next. Shock had overcome him at that point, you think. You're honestly not even sure he noticed when they took his head in one strike. He had just stared and //stared// at your brother's body, like he was incapable of looking away.
Even when when his head rolled, his gaze still somehow turned to his son. One corpse looking at another.
Mother, though...She'd had plently of screams left even at the end. Her rage and fury still burned bright no matter the circumstances. She was your protector; fierce and unwavering in the eyes of all but her family. She was only silenced when her throat was cut ear to ear.
[[Adelaide was all you had left, then, and even she was ripped from you.|after flashback]]Upon fleeing your homeland, your birthright, your sister had changed. The responsible yet kind crown princess morphed into a beast you had yet to meet. One that could not be tamed, thirsting for revenge no matter the cost.
It got her killed, in the end.
Your eyes open once more. For a moment, you recognize the face in the mirror. Then it shifts, and shifts again.
Adelaide. Lukas. Your father. //Yourself//, unburdened with grief and time. You aren't them, though. You'll never be them. You'll never be your sister, or your brother, or your father. You won't even be yourself, because that child died a long time ago.
All that's left of you is a husk. A body, older in age now than your big sister and brother. Crown Princess Adelaide and Prince Lukas, both dead and long rotted in unmarked graves. Only their bones were left now. Their memory, too, resting on your shoulders so heavy it threatened to bow your spine.
The ghost of the youngest child of House Vailia is the last one left breathing.
[[How pathetic.|after pathetic]]Soon you see light peeking over the horizon from your window, turning the bay a brilliant gold. It looks far too pretty to have seen so much death.
Norwick is a brutal place, though. It belongs to Tetha, the kingdom south of your homeland Navra, but the monarchy has all but given up hope of squashing the rabble here. This is a city of crime and the price of success is blood.
It nearly gave you whiplash, back when you had just arrived in Norwick. From being raised in a palace with every need and want met, you'd then been tossed to the streets with only your sister at your side.
Now it's just you.
Adelaide had been naive to think she might make enough connections here to take back your family's throne. She had grown comfortable, not realizing the usurper had eyes in this very city.
You won't follow in her footsteps. You refuse to meet your end at the bottom of the bay, your lungs filled with brackish water.
No, you found other means of survival. Not as luxurious as a crown, perhaps, but it's kept you alive all this time...

You work for the Ellende, the woes and misery of Norwick. There are other assassins, of course; the privately hired or those loyal to one gang or another. The Ellende are the largest group impervious to the local politics, however. Anyone can die if you have enough gold.
Striker is the only other assassin you actually know that works with the Ellende. His real name is still a mystery, but at the very least you'd seen each other's faces once or twice. You don't poach each other's jobs, and he'd cracks a few jokes if you see each other in passing.
You've made a comfortable, if bloody, life for yourself in this deceitful and backstabbing city. Enough for a nice apartment in the hills, where the streets didn't stink of sewage in the summer like around the bay and town square.

The kids who run around the bay came in handy, at least. They'll help you find marks and some of them are actually pretty sharp if you toss a coin their way. Similarly, a young woman who lives across the hall from you is an asset as well.
Lydia Tillens became a single mother after her husband died. He'd been found washed up in the bay; that was how she'd discovered he'd been in business with Jansen Hendrick and somehow got on the man's bad side. She works down by the fish markets, and gets all the best gossip.
More than willing to share, too, as long as you give her enough of a cut to keep her infant fed.
The one down side is the city guards. They hound //you// way more than they do any of the bigshot criminals who cause //actual// problems.
